SOYOU GOT BRACES…NOW WHAT?

My collaboratingcolleague Thomas dust and I have spent many hours over the years discussing andresearching the psychological and physical events surrounding a trumpeteracquiring braces. Tom is a professional trumpeter and the son of a dentist, inaddition to being professor of secondary education, and I am a professionaltrumpeter and brother of a periodontist, in addition to being a professor ofhigh brass.

My personal highschool experience went as follows: There I was, a high school sophomore and Ihad it all, first chair in a leading Wisconsin large high school band program,when my mother said it was time to get top and bottom braces to correct “thosetwo crooked front teeth from your father’s side of the family.” Suddenly I amsitting third chair, with thoughts of jazz ensemble and pep band lead trumpetand brassy exciting solos…gone.

I was devastated.I tried wax, pushing hard, not using any pressure at all, new and unusualembouchures, consulted with my band director and local teachers, but nothingseemed to help a bit! I did persevere, but not in a direction I would adviseanyone reading this article to go. I bit a hard sticky caramel bar which pulledoff the braces on my top front teeth. The situation became so frustrating forthe orthodontist and my mother that they both gave up on my top teeth. My teetheventually straightened on their own, and bottom teeth braces did not seem tobother my playing, and I became a professional trumpet artist, and now auniversity professor of trumpet.

My other morerealistic options were: 1) to have quit, redefining my young teenage self in adifferent way, which seemed far too high a price to pay just for getting somedental work done, and 2) to search the world over for a method of playingtrumpet with braces. In 1973, there was no literature, methods, or appliancesavailable to a young player with braces, at least that I could find. The mostlearned advice I could find was “use soft wax,” and “bad luck…get used to it.”

Dr. Dust and Ihave been searching for and experimenting with appliances and methods of playingwith which a young trumpeter enhanced with braces would experience:

¯ a minimal loss of range, technique, andsound,

¯ the benefits of the braces their parentsare paying for, and

¯ a technique which would result in continuedmuscular and musical development on the trumpet, which transfers positivelywithout radical change to playing when the braces are removed.

We researched theMorgan Lip Bumper, the Jet-Tone Lip Protector, Brace Guard and Manhart’s BraceBase (polysiloxane dental impression putty), Teflon pipe tape, and Infolab’s“Brace Relief” kit. For my contribution to braces research, I had a localdental lab make me a set of top braces, and I hit the practice room!

The Morgan LipBumper and the Jet-Tone Lip Protector are flexible thin plastic shields thatfit snugly over the brackets and wire in a line. When playing with my braces, Ifound these smoothed out the sharp edges of the braces but slightly enlargedthe “lump” that is the real problem of the braces on the top front teeth. Ifound I could play by transferring virtually all the pressure of the mouthpieceto my bottom lip…a very unnatural feel, but I eliminated the “goose call”missed notes from the piece of top lip constantly pivoting in the mouthpiecedue to the lump under the mouthpiece.

Teflon pipe tapeproved to be tricky to get in place and keep in place, and due to its very thinand light nature there is an elevated danger of possibly inhaling the tape. Thethinness of the tape eased somewhat the edges of the brackets.

The quick-hardeningpolysiloxane dental impression putty mentioned above with the Brace Guard andBrace Base products allowed me to play almost as well as before I put on thebraces and formed a smooth base for my embouchure. It seemed the harder Ipushed the mouthpiece into the relaxed top lep with the smooth base under thelip, the more the lip relaxed and played with my pre-brace sound quality,volume, and range, though the strange feeling was disconcerting at first. Eachbrace protector I made was slightly different and I made five different stylesbefore I got a “great” one (it convinced me to make a digital movie of myefforts and include it with the putty!).

“Going natural”and toughing it out was extremely painful, and the brackets and braces causedme to tense up the muscles in my top lip to fight the pain and control the flipflopping of the top lip in the mouthpiece below the wire. If a student actuallygets calluses so he or she can push harder, the sound pattern will still beinconsistent due to the lump of the brackets and wire. My best success wasexperienced when I treated the embouchure as described above with the MorganLip Bumper and the Jet-Tone Lip Protector, by transferring the mouthpiecepressure to the bottom lip.

TOPTEN THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN YOU GET BRACES:

Do not panic! You are the same fine person and musician as you were the day before you received the dental appliance. You will be remembered by how well you handled the adversity!
Keep blowing! It is the wind that activates the air in the trumpet and the lips that vibrate. There will be a great tendency to shrink or squeeze your blowing in response to the strange feelings.
If you tense up your top lip and squeeze you’re your air in response to the pain and strangeness, you will likely have a tense and spitty sound.
Try a number of methods, and go with what works.
If you have pain, sores, and bleeding, stop!! Practice with more breaks and shorter phrases.
Listen to the best trumpet playing you can find, and constantly imagine it is you.
When you play, insist on the best sound and carry your articulations, music, and range through that sound.
Do not go to extremes to find the range you had yesterday. Your range today with braces will be different, at least for a while.
Accept that it is going to feel different!
Go slowly when the braces come off. You will have grown and changed musically since the braces were first put on, and instantly demanding your old range, sound, and endurance usually deforms an otherwise fine embouchure. You must relearn the trumpet for a bit!

4th Grade World Music Project

4th Grade,

So, first of all, this is a mini-project, not a small piece of homework. Therefore, I am not expecting a few lines: I am expecting a few paragraphs with some pictures and examples, etc. You should do this project on on piece of paper, it could either be printer paper, several pieces of printer paper taped together or on small posterboard. Just remember though, there are lots of you and not much space to display these pieces of work, so bigger isn't better!

Now onto the task. You have each been given a style of world music from Gamelan to Pop Music: The Beatles. Your task is to design a fact sheet about that style of music.

Your poster should tell me:

Where in the world is the music from?
What is it famous for?
Are there any dance moves associated with it?
What is the history of the music?
What are the instruments that are found in this style of music?
Which performers made it famous?
What do the instruments look like?

e.g. Irish Music

Irish music is from all over Ireland.
It is famous for being easy to dance to. There are Irish jigs and Irish reels.
Irish Dancers don't move their arms when dancing, it is all with their legs. Michael Flattley made irish music famous with Riverdance.
Irish music started about 1900, where workers found ways to entertain themselves after a hard day at work.
Irish music uses instruments such as the fiddle, accordion and bohdran (a small drum)
The Corrs took Irish music and mixed it with modern-day pop to celebrate traditional music.

So, the last blog template was a little bleak. It was dark and moody.
As the days get shorter and we wake up before the sun does, I thought the blog would look nicer if it was a little bit cheerier.

I kept the same background, but made the text boxes brighter and used a nice happy purple, rather than orange.

Your homework is pretty extensive this week, and I do not apologize for it!

Task 1:
You need to write out how the note looks on the page for the notes C-C' (Cornet/Alto Horn) or B-flat-B-flat' if you're a trombone or baritone. On the top of the note write what note name it is. Underneath you need to write what the valve combination/slide position is.

Task 2:
Using the information you made for Task 1, you need to write out 10 words that can be spelt only using the letters A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Then you need to write out those words as music.

Task 3:
Come up with 5 words just using the letters A, B, C, D, E, F or G. These can be the same words as Task 2. You then need to write words with the valve combinations underneath.

So the Christmas show has been decided. It's going to be a version of 'I Need a Little Christmas Vacation' with some additions and omissions.

It's mega exciting, fun and cool! Here's a synopsis from someone else's website!

It's the last day of school before winter vacation officially starts. Excitement fills the air with plans of tropical vacations, shopping at the mall, visits from relatives, NO homework for a while, favorite holiday meals and lots of presents! Cleaning your Instruments

Hi Budding Instrumentalists,

Pay attention to this line:
It’s very important that you NOT get the top part of the valve wet! This is the part with the felt pads on it. If those felt pads get wet, they can compress and cause your valves to become misaligned. The only part of the valve that needs to be cleaned is the bottom section with the ports (those are the holes that line up with the various slides on the trumpet).

Also, look at this video. You do not need to get a plastic tub like the one that they have in the video, a regular bath tub will be absolutely fine!

If you do buy your own mouthpiece, do not dispose of your old one, we will need it in the future! Try practicing at home.
Print out these images on this post, cut them out and then place them on your table, or floor, or carpet, or whatever!

Try to get your parents involved. Can they respond to you calls? Can you respond to their calls.

Try explaining this to your parents. It's a great tool to make sure that you know it yourself!

Penguin Warm Up

Almost every single grade has the experience of becoming a penguin. The extra special ones have had the chance to be a zombie too, if you haven't had the chance yet, don't worry, there are still many weeks until Halloween!

If you want to warm up at home before you practice any of the songs, there is a great recording here so you can sing along with it at home. Get your parents to do it with you - they'll love it! Remember, we're not only warming our voices, but our bodies too, so make sure you do the actions with the song. You can also try doing each verse in a different voice: my favorites are a witch's voice and a big scary monster voice.

Cabaret Troupe Update

Hello Awesome Cabaret Troupe Girls,

So, after a ton of questions from the 6th grade today, I thought I'd just clear up a few things. (Mainly so I can say "Check the Blog" rather than wasting 10 minutes of valuable lesson time!!)

You auditioned last Thursday (10/13) to get into Cabaret Troupe and for the Christmas Show 2011 (A Pirate Christmas), however as I told you in that rehearsal/audition, there aren't that many singing solos - it's a large ensemble show.

I will endeavor to ensure that all of you get speaking lines however, so do not panic!

Some of you have also noticed that the majority of the characters are either elves or pirates. As soon as I've finished reading the entire scrips and writing down how many I need of each (including special ones such as 'Tiny Elves' and 'Blue Beard 6'...) I will cast for them. Please don't keep asking if you can be a particular character, I'll make sure it's a fair as possible.

See all 32 of you on Thursday - it'll be a blast. And remember, It's an Island Christmas - WOAH!

January Brass Band Spectacular!

Whilst I'm in a giving-out-the-date mood, the first 'outing' the brass band has is Thursday January 26th, 2012. All four grades will be playing, even the 5th grade who won't have been playing for that long.
Tickets will come out much nearer the time.

Important notice though - make sure that you practice every day, even if it's just for 5-10 minutes. Even if you don't take your instrument home, take your mouthpiece and buzz on it!

Cabaret Troupe Auditions Tomorrow

Ladies,
Cabaret Troupe 2011-2012 auditions are tomorrow. You need to come prepared to sing a song that shouldn't last more than 1 minute. However, I won't go all Simon Cowell on you, I may be British, but I'm not mean!

Middle School Assignment - W/C Monday 10th October

I am fed up of tripping over instruments and not being able to start class on time because the instruments always go missing!

So, instead of getting annoyed, I am coming up with an assignment!

All of the middle school need to make a poster with your name and your grade on it. Make it colorful, make it personal, make it fun, make it good. Then you need to stick it on to you case.

Another suggestion is to get a luggage tag (see picture) and draw it on that instead.

Every single instrument should have a name tag or a colorful name poster on their case by the end of next week! Please, please, please do it!
